The Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel was Britain’s first purpose-built pedestrian & cycling tunnel running under the River Tyne between Willington Quay in Wallsend and Jarrow.
Originally opened in 1951 at a cost of around £800,000 the two tunnels run in parallel, one for pedestrian use and a slightly larger tunnel for cyclists. Both tunnels are 270 mtrs in length and lie 12.2 mtrs below the river Tyne in North & South Tyneside.
To this day, the Tyne pedestrian tunnel’s escalators remain the longest wooden escalators in the world.
