The Angel Of The North

This iconic steel sculpture of an angel which was erected in 1998 stands in the heart of Geordieland in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear.

Standing 20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54 metres across this Geordie icon has been painted and photographed by artists & photographers from all over the world.

    I remember when it was first announced that Anthony Gormly was to design The Angel on top of the pit head baths at Team Collery all hell broke loose. People from far & wide had their say it would be hideous, awful etc,etc it would make the area a laughing stock, now the Gateshead Angel is The Angel of the North often thought to be in Newcastle.
    I remember the weekend it was built I have photos and I have loved it ever since, there must not be a day when someone isn’t beside it.
    It’s in my hometown and I Love It, it represents our heritage.

    1. Everytime I go past people are taking photos and admiring it and I agree Ann, it has become part of our heritage .. I would love to view some of your photos from the weekend it was built
