The Royal Navy helicopter carrier berthed at Northumbria Quay in North Shields and though it was not open to the general public, sea cadets & students from local schools & colleges were given a tour of the carrier as well as the opportunity to learn about career opportunities on board the Illustrious and in the wider Royal Navy.

Lt Cdr Charles Wood, North of England regional liaison officer told the BBC that the Navy was “delighted the ship is returning to its birth place” and that “we still rely on the expertise available here on Tyneside to conduct repairs when we are alongside”.
