The Changing Face Of The Tyne & Wear Metro System

The Tyne and Wear Metro, also locally known by Geordies as simply the Metro, serves the Geordieland areas of Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, South Tyneside & North Tyneside through to Sunderland on Wearside.

The Metro system opened in 1980 and is now the 2nd largest metro system in the UK, after the London Underground, however since then the Metro system has gone through a series of changes including the introduction of a new set of trains and carriages (shown in pic 1) which are being introduced from June 2012.

Other changes to the name, logo & routes can be viewed below thanks to photographs sent to us by long term Geordie trainspotter Robert Payne or as some people might know him “bobthedog”.
